About this tour

Travel from the coloured hills of Altyn-Emel to Kyrgyzstan’s highland lakes, then fly west to the Caspian coast for a five-day Mangystau expedition. This 18-day journey begins and ends in Almaty, linking private 4x4 travel, a UAZ outing to Altyn-Arashan, a horse ride to Kel-Suu and nights in guesthouses, hotels, yurts and camps.

The first section explores Aktau Mountains, the Singing Dune, Kaindy, Kolsai and Charyn before crossing at Karkara to Karakol. Continue along southern Issyk-Kul to Kadji-Sai, Song-Kol, Naryn, Tash Rabat and Kel-Suu. Chon-Kemin and Bishkek bring you back towards Kazakhstan before the Almaty–Aktau flight.

In Mangystau, the pace changes to remote canyons, the Caspian shore, Torysh’s stone formations, Tuzbair and Bozzhyra. Three nights of the five-day expedition are in tents, with one at Kogez ethno-village. After returning to Aktau, fly to Almaty on day 18.

Kel-Suu is visited on horseback, normally from late May through September, with border-permit preparation arranged two weeks before departure. Outside that season it is replaced or omitted: a replacement keeps the trip at 18 days, while omitting the day makes a 17-day itinerary. Mountain access, weather and the confirmed overnight plan determine the final schedule.

Detailed tour program

  1. Day 1Guesthouse in Basshi

Almaty — Basshi — Aktau Mountains

    The day’s journey

Leave Almaty in the morning for Altyn-Emel National Park. Allow roughly four hours to Basshi with rest stops. After lunch and park-entry arrangements, continue to Aktau Mountains along a long, uneven unpaved section inside the park.

Walk among the pale and coloured slopes at a pace suited to the group. Return to Basshi in the evening for dinner and a guesthouse stay.

  2. Day 2Overnight in Saty

Singing Dune — Zharkent — Saty

    The day’s journey

After breakfast, visit the Singing Dune. Morning light reveals the curves of the sand ridge, and wildlife such as kulan or goitered gazelles may be seen along the road. Choose a comfortable walk on the dune with your guide.

Have lunch in Basshi or Zharkent, then continue on the long drive to Saty. Stops include the Tiger Mountains and Zharkent Mosque, with breaks along the way. Dinner and overnight in Saty.

  3. Day 3Second night in Saty

    Kaindy and Kolsai Lakes

    The day’s journey

Visit Kaindy in the morning. A local UAZ shortens the walking approach, followed by a walk to accessible viewpoints overlooking the submerged spruce trunks. Return to Saty for lunch.

In the afternoon, visit Lower Kolsai for a lakeside walk and photographs at the group’s pace. Boat hire and additional horse riding can be arranged if desired and time allows. Dinner and another night in Saty.

  4. Day 4Hotel in Karakol

Charyn — Karkara border — Karakol

    The day’s journey

After breakfast, drive to Charyn Canyon. Choose the full Valley of Castles walk to the river and back, around 7 km, or a shorter upper-viewpoint route. Agree the walking time with your guide.

Lunch in Kegen, then cross the Kegen–Karkara border into Kyrgyzstan and continue to Karakol. A short city visit is possible depending on arrival time. Dinner and a hotel stay.

  5. Day 5Second night in Karakol

Altyn-Arashan by UAZ and thermal springs

    The day’s journey

Travel from Karakol to Altyn-Arashan in a Soviet-era UAZ. This is a slow journey on a rough mountain road: allow approximately three hours up and two and a half hours back, depending on conditions.

Walk in the valley, have lunch and visit the natural thermal springs. Return to Karakol for another hotel night. Expect the rough ride to be a significant part of the day.

  6. Day 6Yurt stay by Issyk-Kul

    Jeti-Oguz — Barskoon — Skazka — Kadji-Sai

    The day’s journey

Leave Karakol after breakfast. Stop at Jeti-Oguz’s red rocks, continue via Barskoon and explore Skazka Canyon. Walks and lunch are arranged around driving time and the group’s interests.

An Arabel Plateau detour may be possible in the right season and weather, subject to the overall day’s schedule. Arrive in Kadji-Sai for dinner and a traditional yurt stay. Bathroom facilities at the yurt camp may be shared.

  7. Day 7Seasonal yurt night at Song-Kol

    Eagle demonstration — Ak-Sai — Kochkor — Song-Kol

    The day’s journey

After breakfast, meet an eagle hunter for a demonstration of the traditional practice. Visit Ak-Sai Canyon, then continue through Kochkor towards Song-Kol. Allow roughly 5–6 hours for this demanding mountain transfer, depending on the road.

Spend the evening by Song-Kol Lake, with dinner and a yurt stay. The Song-Kol yurts are unheated, with shared showers and toilets outside. Yurt nights are normally available from late May to early September. Outside that window, a weather-permitting lake visit can be paired with a night in Kochkor; poor conditions may require a different route.

  8. Day 8Overnight according to the confirmed plan

    Song-Kol — Naryn — Tash Rabat

    The day’s journey

Leave the Song-Kol area after breakfast and travel via Naryn towards Tash Rabat. The day combines highland scenery with the history of caravan routes, with rest and lunch stops along the way.

Visit the stone caravanserai at Tash Rabat and walk in its surroundings. The overnight base is agreed together with the logistics for the following Kel-Suu day.

  9. Day 9Overnight in Naryn

    Kel-Suu on horseback — Naryn

    The day’s journey

Dedicate the day to Kel-Suu: drive to the start of the horse-riding route and continue to the lake on horseback. Horse hire and the border permit are not included in the tour price and are paid separately. Border-permit preparation is arranged two weeks before departure. Lake time and transfers are planned around actual conditions.

After the visit, return to Naryn for the night. Kel-Suu’s approximate season is late May through September. Outside it, agree a replacement or remove this day; without a replacement the complete tour becomes 17 rather than 18 days.

  10. Day 10Guesthouse in Chon-Kemin

    Naryn — Kochkor — Orto-Tokoy — Chon-Kemin

    The day’s journey

Leave Naryn for Chon-Kemin via Kochkor and the Orto-Tokoy Reservoir area. Stop for lunch in Kochkor, with breaks for rest and panoramic photographs along the way.

Arrive in Chon-Kemin valley towards evening. Dinner and a guesthouse night provide a rest after the highland section of the journey.

  11. Day 11Hotel in Bishkek

    Burana — Ala-Archa — Bishkek

    The day’s journey

Travel from Chon-Kemin to Burana Tower, then plan a walk in Ala-Archa and continue to Bishkek. Your guide balances this full day between the historical stop, nature and the city.

Explore Bishkek according to arrival time and traffic, prioritising the places that interest the group. Dinner and hotel overnight. City sightseeing may be shorter if traffic causes delays.

  12. Day 12Hotel in Aktau

Bishkek — Korday — Almaty — flight to Aktau

    The day’s journey

After breakfast, leave Bishkek, cross the border at Korday and drive to Almaty. Border queues and traffic determine the actual transfer time.

Fly from Almaty to Aktau, followed by a transfer and hotel night before the five-day expedition. Flight timing must allow a sufficient margin for the cross-border drive and is chosen around the confirmed schedule.

  13. Day 13Tent camp by the Caspian Sea

Mangystau: Shakpak Ata — Kapamsay — Zhygylgan — Saura

    The day’s journey

Start the expedition from Aktau and visit Shakpak Ata underground mosque, with behaviour and clothing guidance provided beforehand. Continue to Kapamsay for a walk and lunch stop.

Explore Zhygylgan and head to the Saura coast. Set up a tent camp by the Caspian Sea for dinner and the night. The campsite is chosen according to weather and access conditions.

  14. Day 14Overnight at Kogez ethno-village

    Torysh — Kyzylkala — Sherkala — Airakty — Kogez

    The day’s journey

After breakfast by the sea, pack up camp and visit Torysh Valley of Balls. Continue to Kyzylkala for a walk and lunch, then make a photo stop at Sherkala Mountain.

Spend the afternoon among the castle-like landscapes of Airakty-Shomanay. Dinner and overnight at Kogez ethno-village. A bathhouse visit, if desired, is arranged separately.

  15. Day 15Tent night at Tuzbair

    Shetpe — Zharmysh — Tuzbair

    The day’s journey

After breakfast at Kogez, travel via Shetpe to refuel and replenish supplies. Have lunch at a café in Zharmysh, then continue to Tuzbair’s upper viewpoints.

After the panoramic stops, descend to the lower Tuzbair area when road and weather conditions permit. Dinner and a tent night, with the campsite selected locally by the guide.

  16. Day 16Tent night at Bozzhyra

    Tuzbair — Bozzhyra

    The day’s journey

Have breakfast at Tuzbair and continue to Bozzhyra. Explore the upper viewpoints and stop for lunch overlooking the landscape.

Descend into the Bozzhyra area along an accessible route. Dinner and another tent night. Walking pace and viewpoints are chosen according to weather and unpaved-road conditions.

  17. Day 17Hotel in Aktau

    Bokty — Kyzylkup — Zhanaozen — Aktau

    The day’s journey

After breakfast at Bozzhyra, visit Bokty Mountain and the layered Kyzylkup hills, known as Tiramisu. Stop for walks and photographs.

Lunch at a café in Zhanaozen, then return to Aktau. The five-day Mangystau expedition ends with a hotel night before the return flight.

  18. Day 18Tour ends in Almaty

    Flight from Aktau to Almaty

    The day’s journey

Transfer to Aktau airport and fly to Almaty, where the main 18-day programme ends. The finishing time depends on the selected flight.

If the Kel-Suu day was omitted without replacement, this flight takes place on day 17. Any extra nights or onward arrangements in Almaty are agreed separately.

This is the 18-day seasonal itinerary. Kel-Suu is normally visited from late May through September, with border-permit preparation two weeks before departure. Outside that season, replace the visit or omit the day; omission without replacement makes the tour 17 days. Song-Kol yurt stays, mountain roads, the Karkara crossing, flights and Mangystau camps depend on confirmed local conditions. The final overnight plan and flight times are agreed before booking.

Great Guide, Great Tour

Had an excellent three day small group tour to Altyn Emel, Kaindy/Kolsai and Charyn Canyon with Tau. Tau was a terrific guide and I highly recommend him. He was friendly and a lot of fun. He has lots of knowledge of the area and was very generous with his time to allow us all the opportunity to enjoy the area. Also takes great photos!

The places we visited on the tour are beautiful and very worth the effort to travel there. Kazakhstan surpassed all expectations and loved my time there.

Fantastic guide, amazing trip!

Travelled with my mom in a group tour last June. We had Tau as our guide and it was a magical trip! Great driver and conversationalist, and he took us to some beautiful landscapes and also on some unreal hikes and climbs. Also very well prepared - borrowed many blankets when the temperatures got a little chilly, and had rain ponchos on hand when the weather turned rainy.

After we returned to Almaty, Tau provided great recommendations and showed some pretty neat bars / spots around town.

Hands-down, one of the highlights for summer 2019. Highly recommended. Tau will ensure that you have a great time in Kazakhstan!

A thrilling 6 day tour

An 18-day 4x4 journey across Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan

The route links Altyn-Emel, Kaindy, Kolsai and Charyn with Kyrgyzstan’s mountain valleys and lakes, then adds a five-day Mangystau expedition. Start in Almaty, cross at Karkara, return through Korday and use flights between Almaty and Aktau for the western Kazakhstan section.

This is a varied expedition with long transfers, rough roads, guided walks, a UAZ outing and a horse-riding day. Your guide adapts the pace to the group, while border procedures, mountain access and flight timings shape the overall schedule.

Kel-Suu, Song-Kol and the seasonal itinerary

Kel-Suu is reached on horseback, normally from late May through September. Border-permit preparation starts two weeks before departure, so the visit needs advance planning. Outside the operating season, agree a replacement or omit the day: the latter makes a 17-day itinerary.

Song-Kol yurt nights are normally available from late May to early September, with shared showers and toilets outside the yurts. Outside that window, a weather-permitting visit can be paired with a night in Kochkor. Heavy rain, snow or inaccessible roads may change the mountain programme.

Five days in Mangystau: coast, stone formations and camps

From Aktau, travel to Shakpak Ata, Kapamsay, Zhygylgan and Saura, then Torysh, Kyzylkala, Sherkala and Airakty. Continue through Tuzbair and Bozzhyra before Bokty, Kyzylkup and the return to Aktau. Three expedition nights are in tents and one at Kogez; hotels in Aktau bracket the five-day section.

What to expect from transport and accommodation

Private 4x4 travel is combined with a Soviet-era UAZ for the rough Altyn-Arashan approach and horses for Kel-Suu. Hotels and guesthouses alternate with yurts and remote tent camps. Facilities vary by overnight location, and yurt or camping stays should not be understood as having private in-room bathrooms. Confirm the rooming plan and camping arrangements when booking.

Per-person prices and booking

Prices based on twin sharing are $3,050 with four travellers, $3,900 with three, $4,500 with two and $8,500 for a solo traveller. Confirm room arrangements for your group before booking. Share your dates and group size early, especially for the Kel-Suu permit and flight planning. Seasonal changes and a shortened 17-day itinerary require a confirmed revised programme and quotation.

Questions about this tour

How long is the Offroad Adventure tour?

The complete Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Mangystau itinerary takes 18 days, starting and finishing in Almaty. If the Kel-Suu day is omitted without a replacement, the trip takes 17 days.

How much does the tour cost?

Prices in US dollars per person are $3,050 for 4 travellers, $3,900 for 3, $4,500 for 2 and $8,500 for a solo traveller. Shared accommodation is based on two people per room; room allocation and expedition accommodation are confirmed when booking.

When can we visit Kel-Suu?

The planned season is approximately late May to September, subject to mountain weather and road access. Outside this period, we arrange an alternative location or remove the Kel-Suu day.

Do we need a border permit for Kel-Suu?

Yes. The Kel-Suu border permit is arranged in advance, two weeks before departure, and is paid separately from the tour price. Please contact us early enough to prepare the visit.

How do we reach Kel-Suu and Altyn-Arashan?

Kel-Suu is visited on horseback; horse hire and the border permit are paid separately. The Soviet-era UAZ excursion to Altyn-Arashan and admission to its natural hot springs are included. The rough mountain journey takes approximately three hours uphill and two and a half hours back, depending on conditions, with a return to Karakol that evening.

What are the overnight stays like?

The journey combines hotels, guesthouses, traditional yurts and expedition camps. The Mangystau section has three tent nights and one night at Kogez ethno-village, with hotel stays in Aktau before and after the expedition. Facilities in yurts and camps differ from hotel rooms.

Do Song-Kol yurts have private bathrooms?

No. Showers and toilets are shared and located outside the yurts. Yurt overnight stays are normally available from late May to early September. At other times, weather may allow a lake visit with an overnight stay in Kochkor, or require a route change.

Which places are included in the five-day Mangystau route?

The expedition visits Shakpak Ata, Kapamsay, Zhygylgan, Saura, Torysh, Kyzyl Kala, Sherkala, Airakty, Tuzbair, Bozzhyra, Bokty and Kyzylkup, with a return to Aktau on the fifth day. Camp locations depend on weather and ground conditions.

Is this trip suitable for everyone?

This is an active journey with long drives, uneven tracks, horse riding and camping. Tell us about your walking ability and comfort preferences before booking so that we can discuss the pace and practical options.

Are flight times and mountain stops fixed?

No. Domestic flights, border crossings and mountain roads affect the schedule. We confirm flights and transfers for your dates, leave time for the border and adapt walks and exposed locations to conditions. The final list of inclusions and any separately paid services is confirmed in your booking.

How do I book?

Send your dates and group size. A manager agrees the route, preferred stops, accommodation and dietary needs with you. After you confirm the itinerary and total price, pay a 20% deposit: we secure your guide and then reserve the agreed accommodation. The remaining 80% is due on day one; payment in US dollars is available. For direct Silk Travel bookings, cancellation 14 calendar days or more before the start receives a refund of 100% of the amount paid; with less notice, the 20% deposit is non-refundable. Third-party bookings follow their platform terms.

Are the tours private?

Yes. Every tour is for your own party, including solo travellers. We do not run join-in groups or add you to another booking. Your English-speaking guide adapts walks, stops and time at locations to your interests and ability within the agreed itinerary. Extra days, accommodation upgrades and optional paid activities are quoted separately.

What vehicles do you use?

All our vehicles are comfortable, air-conditioned and undergo technical inspections. For groups of up to 4 guests, we use off-road-capable Toyota Land Cruiser or Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs. For 5 guests, we use a Toyota Sequoia SUV. For groups of more than 5 guests, we use a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

What if prices differ by group size?

The price depends on group size. Send your dates and the number of people and a manager will confirm the exact offer.

Can you arrange halal meals, vegetarian food and food allergies?

Yes. Vegetarian and halal meals can be arranged in advance, with food adapted to guests’ preferences. Tell us about allergies before booking. A severe allergy requires individual discussion and confirmation of arrangements, including any needed controls against contact with the allergen. Check the chosen tour’s meal inclusions: meals are paid separately on some itineraries.

Do you provide child car seats?

Yes. We provide a child car seat on advance request. Tell us the child’s age and height when booking so we can prepare a suitable seat before the tour starts.

How can I stay connected during the trip?

On routes through Almaty, Bishkek or Karakol, you can buy a local SIM card along the way; tell us if you would like help. Mobile coverage depends on the operator and may be unavailable in remote mountain areas.
