About Altyn-Arashan from Karakol: UAZ journey and hot springs

Our Altyn-Arashan visit starts in Karakol and returns there the same evening. Travel in a Soviet-era UAZ along a rough mountain road: allow approximately three hours uphill and two and a half hours back. These are planning estimates, not fixed journey times.

In the valley, the programme allows time for a walk, lunch and the natural hot springs before returning to the hotel in Karakol. The UAZ journey and spring admission are included in the Altyn-Arashan option of Silk Road Nomad and in the planned Altyn-Arashan visits on Offroad Adventure and Five Stans Adventure.

Good to know

How long is the UAZ journey?

Approximately three hours from Karakol to the valley and two and a half hours back. The mountain road is rough, and actual times depend on conditions.

Are the UAZ and hot springs included?

Yes, for the Altyn-Arashan option of the ten-day Silk Road Nomad tour and the scheduled Altyn-Arashan visits on Offroad Adventure and Five Stans Adventure.

Do we stay overnight in Altyn-Arashan?

The agreed programmes return to Karakol that evening for a hotel night. A valley overnight or a trek to Ala-Kul would require a separate programme.

Does Silk Road Nomad visit both Altyn-Arashan and Sary-Jaz?

No. Choose one of these destinations for day three. The choice is agreed with the guests and remains subject to weather and road access.

Getting to Altyn-Arashan from Karakol

The excursion is a full day based in Karakol. The rough UAZ journey takes much of the day, with around three hours up and two and a half hours back depending on conditions. Discuss your comfort with prolonged travel on uneven ground before booking.

On the ten-day Silk Road Nomad route, choose either Altyn-Arashan with hot springs or Sary-Jaz for mountain scenery; both are not combined in one day. Altyn-Arashan also appears on the 18-day Offroad and 38-day Five Stans routes. It is not in the standard six- and eight-day Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan programmes.

Weather, walking and the return to Karakol

Road access and the time available in the valley depend on the weather and ground conditions. The guide adjusts walking time to the group and the return drive. The scheduled excursion ends with a hotel night in Karakol; an overnight in the valley or a trek to Ala-Kul is not part of this day trip.

What to bring for the hot springs

Bring swimwear, a towel, footwear for changing at the springs, walking shoes, warm layers and protection from rain. Keep a dry change of clothing for the return journey. Tell us about your walking preferences and comfort needs before the trip.
