About Kolsai Lakes, Kazakhstan: how to get there, best time and tours

Kolsai is a chain of three mountain lakes in the Kungey Alatau. Standard sightseeing trips visit Lower Kolsai, also called the first lake, where you can walk beside the water and see the spruce-covered slopes. A hike to the second lake is a separate mountain outing and is not included in our standard lake stop.

Choose a long one-day trip from Almaty or stay overnight in Saty to spread the visits over two days. Our one-day programme combines Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy and takes about 14–16 hours, starting at 05:00. The two-day programme includes a night in Saty; check each tour page for its route, seasonal conditions and included services.

Good to know

How many lakes are there?

Three lakes in the Kolsay River gorge. The first two are the most visited.

How to get to Kolsai Lake from Almaty

Plan roughly 300 km and 4–6 hours by road each way from Almaty, depending on your starting point, stops, traffic and weather. Saty is the base village for visiting the lakes. You can travel independently in your own or a rental car, arrange a transfer with a driver, or join an organised tour. If arriving in Saty without a car, arrange the onward journey to the lake and the return pick-up in advance.

On Silk Travel’s organised lake visits, the drive from Saty to Lower Kolsai is about 15 km and usually takes 15–20 minutes before any queue at the park checkpoint. The final approach from the main parking area is on foot, approximately 200 metres. A sightseeing stop can include a lakeside walk, photographs and a café break; the time available depends on the selected tour’s programme. Boat hire and horse riding are optional and paid separately, subject to availability. For an independent trip, confirm current entry charges and access directly rather than treating a tour’s timing or included tickets as general park rules.

When to visit: summer walks, autumn colours and winter conditions

Kazakhstan.travel lists June–September as the main visiting season and September–October for autumn photography. Summer is a practical choice for longer walks, but bring rain protection and a warm layer. For an autumn visit, allow for colder mornings and less daylight. Lower Kolsai can also be visited in winter when the road and park access are open; snow and ice can shorten the walk, and boats or horse rides should not be assumed to operate. In spring and after heavy precipitation, check road and trail conditions before departure. Access to the first lake does not confirm access to the higher lakes: ask the national park about the exact hiking route you plan.

What to bring and what to check before visiting

Wear shoes with grip and pack a warm layer, a waterproof jacket, sun protection, drinking water and a small daypack. Carry cash for personal purchases and optional activities. Check the current park entry and vehicle charges before an independent visit; do not rely on an old price list. For the first lake, choose a short viewpoint walk or a longer walk along the shore according to your fitness and the conditions. A trip to the second lake requires separate planning, more time and suitable hiking equipment.
