Altyn-Emel National Park: Singing Dune, Aktau mountains and tours

The drive from Almaty to Basshi takes roughly four hours, depending on road conditions. Park entry tickets are arranged in the village before continuing through the checkpoint. Reaching Aktau involves a long, uneven unpaved section, travelled by 4x4 on this tour.

The Singing Dune is approximately 50–60 km from Basshi. The itinerary visits it in the morning, with Aktau explored on the previous afternoon. Allowing two days with an overnight stay in Basshi leaves time for both sights and the return drive. Katutau is included only where it is listed in the chosen programme.

Trips operate year-round when road and weather conditions permit. Spring and autumn are usually more comfortable for walking; in summer, an early start, water and sun protection matter, while winter calls for warm, wind-resistant clothing. The guide adjusts viewpoint stops and the dune climb to the weather and the group’s fitness.

Bring drinking water, a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, comfortable closed shoes and a warm layer for the evening. Climbing loose sand can be tiring, so you can stop at a height that feels comfortable. Camping equipment is not needed for the standard guesthouse overnight in Basshi.
