About Aksai Canyon, Kyrgyzstan: how to get there and what to see

Aksai is a compact canyon of layered rock and clay on the south shore of Issyk-Kul. A short walk through its narrow passes gives a different perspective from the lakeside roads.

Aksai fits naturally into a south-shore Issyk-Kul route alongside Fairytale Canyon and Barskoon Gorge.

Good to know

How do I visit Aksai Canyon?

Tell us your dates and starting city. We build a private programme with transport and a guide, and you decide the pace.

Can I add it to a longer route?

Yes. Most travellers combine it with neighbouring places and we adjust days, hotels and stops to fit.

When is the best time to visit Aksai Canyon?

Canyons are at their best in the morning and late afternoon, when low sun brings out the colour of the rock. Spring and autumn are comfortable for walking, midsummer can be hot at midday, and after heavy rain some tracks need extra care, so we confirm conditions before the trip.

What should I bring to Aksai Canyon?

Sturdy closed shoes, a hat, plenty of water, sun protection and a light layer for the wind. Tracks can be dusty or muddy depending on the weather.
