10-Day Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan Tour

10-Day Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan Tour

Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy, Kyrgyz mountain valleys, and the Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara on a private journey from Almaty.

About this tour

Silk Road Nomad is a private 10-day journey through Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Start in Almaty and combine canyon walks, mountain lakes and nomadic traditions with the architecture, bazaars and food of the Silk Road cities.

From USD 1,990 per person for a private group of four guests sharing twin or double rooms (two guests per room).

In Kazakhstan, explore Charyn Canyon, Kolsai and Kaindy before crossing into Kyrgyzstan at Kegen–Karkara. From Karakol, choose Altyn-Arashan’s hot springs or the mountain landscapes of Sary-Jaz. Continue through Jeti-Oguz, Barskoon and Skazka Canyon, stay in a traditional Kyrgyz yurt or guesthouse, watch an eagle demonstration and visit Burana Tower on the way to Bishkek.

On Day 6, return to Almaty via Korday and fly to Tashkent. The Uzbekistan part connects Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara by train, with city transfers and time for historic monuments, artisan workshops and local food. Finish with a Tashkent city tour and a transfer to the airport for a flight to Almaty or to your chosen hotel for an extended stay.

Walks and sightseeing are planned around your pace, weather and transport schedules. Altyn-Arashan involves a rough UAZ journey. Afrosiyob seats should be arranged well in advance; transport alternatives and any price changes are agreed before booking.

Detailed tour program

  1. Day 1Almaty – Charyn Canyon – Kolsai Lake – SatyWalks at your pace

Canyon landscapes and a mountain lake

Leave Almaty for Charyn Canyon and explore its rock formations on a walk adapted to your pace. Choose a longer route through the canyon or a shorter walk to the viewpoints. Continue to Lower Kolsai Lake for a walk by the water and time to enjoy the mountain scenery. In the evening, arrive in Saty for dinner and an overnight stay in a guesthouse or yurt.

  2. Day 2Kaindy Lake – Kegen–Karkara border – KarakolLake visit and border crossing

Kaindy’s submerged forest and the road to Kyrgyzstan

After breakfast in Saty, visit Kaindy Lake, known for the spruce trunks rising out of its water. Take time for a walk and photographs before continuing towards Kyrgyzstan. Cross the border at Kegen–Karkara and travel to Karakol. The arrival time depends on road conditions and the border crossing. Overnight in a hotel in Karakol.

  3. Day 3Karakol – Altyn-Arashan hot springs or Sary-Jaz – KarakolChoose one destination

Altyn-Arashan: a UAZ journey and natural hot springs

In the morning, leave Karakol for Altyn-Arashan in a Soviet-era UAZ. The rough mountain road is a demanding part of the journey: allow about 3 hours to reach the valley and around 2.5 hours for the return drive. Visit the natural thermal pools, have lunch in the valley and enjoy time in the mountains. The UAZ transfer and hot spring admission are included in the tour price. Return to your hotel in Karakol in the evening.

As an alternative to Altyn-Arashan, choose a day trip to Sary-Jaz for its hills and mountain landscapes. Agree on your preferred destination before the trip: these are two alternative day programmes, with an evening return to Karakol.

  4. Day 4Karakol – Jeti-Oguz – Barskoon Waterfall – Skazka Canyon – Kadji-SaiWaterfall hike: 1–2 hours

Red rocks, a waterfall and a night in a Kyrgyz yurt

After breakfast, leave Karakol for Jeti-Oguz. Make a short stop to see and photograph the seven red rock formations, then continue to Barskoon Gorge. Allow around 1–2 hours for the hike to the waterfall, followed by lunch in the area. After lunch, explore Skazka Canyon, also known as Fairytale Canyon, on a walk of about one hour.

In the evening, arrive at a yurt camp in Kadji-Sai for an overnight stay in a traditional Kyrgyz nomadic yurt. If you prefer, a guesthouse in Kadji-Sai or Bokonbaevo can be arranged instead; please discuss your accommodation preference before the trip.

  5. Day 5Eagle demonstration – Ak-Sai Canyon – Burana Tower – BishkekNomadic traditions and the Silk Road

From the landscapes of Issyk-Kul to Kyrgyzstan’s capital

After breakfast, watch an eagle demonstration introducing the nomadic tradition of hunting with golden eagles. Continue to Ak-Sai Canyon, where striking landforms create a Mars-like landscape with Issyk-Kul in the background. Take time to enjoy the views and photograph the scenery.

Continue towards Bishkek, stopping for lunch along the way and a visit to Burana Tower, a historic landmark on the Silk Road. In Bishkek, enjoy dinner featuring traditional Central Asian cuisine, followed by an overnight stay in a hotel.

  6. Day 6Bishkek – Korday border – Almaty – flight to TashkentCity sights, border crossing and flight

From Kyrgyzstan to Uzbekistan via Almaty

After breakfast, visit Bishkek’s central square and central mosque. Continue to the Korday border crossing into Kazakhstan, then stop for lunch in Korday before the drive to Almaty. Border queues and road traffic can affect the day’s timing.

A visit to the Tanbaly (Tamgaly) petroglyphs can be arranged on request if there is enough time before the flight. The detour adds around three hours of driving on a poor road, so it must be agreed in advance around the flight schedule.

In the evening, fly from Almaty to Tashkent. The Almaty–Tashkent airfare is not included in the tour price and must be purchased separately; the cost depends on the fare available when booking. On arrival in Tashkent, transfer to the hotel, followed by dinner and an overnight stay.

  7. Day 7Tashkent – Samarkand by Afrosiyob trainHigh-speed train and sightseeing

    Registan, mausoleums and Uzbek cuisine

After breakfast, travel from Tashkent to Samarkand on the high-speed Afrosiyob train, subject to seat availability. Afrosiyob tickets are included in the tour price. The planned departure is around 08:30, with arrival around 10:30; exact times are confirmed when tickets are booked for your travel date.

We recommend booking the tour well in advance: Afrosiyob is very popular, and seats may already be sold out when booking only 1–2 weeks before departure. If tickets are unavailable, a regular train or a comfortable car transfer can be arranged. The cost of this alternative is agreed separately before booking. The longer journey leaves less time for sightseeing, so the day’s programme is adjusted to the confirmed transport.

On arrival, explore Samarkand’s main sights: Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, Registan Square, Bibi-Khanym Mausoleum, Siab Bazaar, Ulugbek Observatory and the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis. Transfers around Samarkand, including the visit to Ulugbek Observatory, are included in the tour price. The order and timing of visits are arranged around your arrival time and preferred pace.

Stop for lunch at a traditional Uzbek restaurant with an open rooftop terrace overlooking the square. In the evening, enjoy dinner featuring local dishes at the hotel and stay overnight in Samarkand.

  8. Day 8Samarkand – Bukhara by Afrosiyob trainTrain journey and sights around Bukhara

Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa Palace, Naqshbandi complex and Chor-Bakr

After breakfast, travel from Samarkand to Bukhara on the high-speed Afrosiyob train. The planned departure is around 09:00, with arrival around 11:30. Exact train times are confirmed when tickets are booked for your travel date. On arrival, transfer to the hotel, check in and have lunch.

In the afternoon, explore historic sites around Bukhara: Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa Palace, the Bahauddin Naqshbandi memorial complex and Chor-Bakr Necropolis. Discover their architecture, walk through the grounds and take time for photographs.

Return to Bukhara in the evening for a dinner featuring traditional Uzbek cuisine and an overnight stay in a hotel.

  9. Day 9Bukhara’s old town and crafts – train to TashkentDaytime or overnight train

Historic monuments, bazaars and Bukhara’s artisans

After breakfast at the hotel, explore historic Bukhara. Visit the Ismail Samani Mausoleum, also known as the Samanid Mausoleum, Chor-Minor, Chashma-Ayub Mausoleum and the Poi-Kalyan ensemble with Miri-Arab Madrasa. The sightseeing schedule is arranged around your chosen train departure.

Around midday, browse the bazaar and artisan workshops. Bukhara’s makers produce ceramic jugs and plates, handmade dolls and traditional clothing; in the workshops, you can watch craftspeople at work and choose souvenirs. Lunch is at a traditional Uzbek restaurant. Personal purchases are paid for separately.

Daytime option: after lunch, take the high-speed Afrosiyob train to Tashkent. The planned departure is around 15:00, with arrival around 19:20; exact times are confirmed when tickets are booked. On arrival, transfer to the hotel, check in and have dinner. Overnight in Tashkent.

Overnight option: depart Bukhara in the evening on a regular overnight train and arrive in Tashkent the following morning, on Day 10. You spend the night on the train instead of in a Tashkent hotel. Both planned return options—the daytime Afrosiyob with a hotel night, or the overnight train—are included in the tour price. Choose your preferred option before booking.

  10. Day 10Tashkent: Old City, Chorsu Bazaar and metro – tour completionCity tour and departure

Chorsu flavours and a walk through central Tashkent

After breakfast, get to know Tashkent. Spend the first part of the day exploring the Old City and Khast Imam complex, then visit the metro to see the designs of Alisher Navoi and Pakhtakor stations. If you chose the overnight train from Bukhara, the start of sightseeing is arranged around your morning arrival and breakfast.

At Chorsu Bazaar, explore the food stalls where cooks prepare traditional dishes and you can choose what to taste. Take time to browse the market, experience everyday city life and have lunch.

After lunch, continue through central Tashkent. For a walk of around two hours, we suggest Independence Square, pedestrian Sayilgoh Street—known as Broadway—and Amir Temur Square. The order and duration of stops are adjusted to traffic and your flight time.

In the evening, transfer to Tashkent Airport for a flight to Almaty. The Tashkent–Almaty airfare is paid separately at the fare available when booking. If you wish to extend your stay in Uzbekistan, finish the tour with a transfer to your chosen Tashkent hotel instead; additional nights after the tour are paid separately. Agree on your preferred ending in advance.

This tour operates year-round. Mountain stops depend on weather and road conditions, with shorter daylight hours in winter. If a stop is inaccessible, we agree on an alternative. The final itinerary, overnight stays and pace are confirmed before booking; train and flight times are checked for your travel dates.

Three countries in one private journey

The first six days connect the landscapes and nomadic traditions of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. You travel from Almaty through Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy to Karakol, the southern shore of Issyk-Kul and Bishkek.

After the flight to Tashkent, the focus shifts to Uzbekistan’s Silk Road cities: Samarkand’s monuments, Bukhara’s artisan workshops and bazaars, and Tashkent’s Old City and metro.

Local guides and a pace that suits you

Your interests help shape the day: more time for a landscape, a shorter walk, or a closer look at history and local food. Guides can adjust stops within the available daylight and the agreed route.

Comfortable vehicles serve the road sections, with a Soviet-era UAZ for the rough Altyn-Arashan track. Train departures, border crossings and flights set limits on how much a day can change.

Guesthouses, hotels and a traditional Kyrgyz yurt

Stay in Saty, Karakol, Kadji-Sai, Bishkek, Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara along the route. Hotels and guesthouse rooms have private bathrooms; yurt camps may have shared facilities. A guesthouse in Kadji-Sai or Bokonbaevo can replace the yurt stay by arrangement.

Plan train tickets and flights in advance

Book early to improve the chance of securing Afrosiyob seats. If a regular train or car is needed instead, the transport and its cost are agreed separately. The planned overnight-train option from Bukhara to Tashkent is included. The Almaty–Tashkent flight is purchased separately.

Price and booking for Silk Road Nomad

The tour starts at USD 1,990 per person for four guests sharing twin or double rooms. Send your dates, group size, preferred room arrangements and choice of Altyn-Arashan or Sary-Jaz. We confirm transport, accommodation, the final itinerary and price before booking.

Questions about this tour

How much does the 10-day tour cost?

Base prices per person depend on group size: 1 guest — USD 4,250; 2 guests — USD 2,640; 3 guests — USD 2,290; 4 guests — USD 1,990. The starting rate of USD 1,990 applies to four guests sharing twin or double rooms, with two guests per room. Accommodation arrangements and the final price for your dates are confirmed before booking.

Where does the tour start and finish?

The tour starts in Almaty and covers Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. On Day 10, finish with a transfer to Tashkent Airport for a flight to Almaty or to your chosen Tashkent hotel if you wish to stay longer.

Do we visit both Altyn-Arashan and Sary-Jaz?

No. Day 3 offers a choice of one destination, with a return to Karakol in the evening. Altyn-Arashan includes natural hot springs and a rough UAZ journey of about 3 hours to the valley and 2.5 hours back. Sary-Jaz is an alternative for mountain landscapes. The Altyn-Arashan UAZ transfer and hot spring admission are included.

How demanding are the walks?

The walking pace and distance can be adapted from easy to moderate. Barskoon includes a waterfall hike of around 1–2 hours, and Skazka a walk of about one hour. Tell us about children, mobility needs or a preference for longer walks before booking. The rough Altyn-Arashan drive is also an important comfort consideration.

Will our accommodation have private bathrooms?

Hotel and guesthouse rooms have a private shower and toilet. Yurt camps may have shared facilities. The Kadji-Sai yurt stay can be replaced by a guesthouse in Kadji-Sai or Bokonbaevo by arrangement.

Are flights and extra hotel nights included?

No. Both flights—Almaty–Tashkent on Day 6 and Tashkent–Almaty after the tour—are paid separately at the fare available when booking. Extra nights after the 10-day programme are also paid separately. Scheduled transfers, including the final transfer to Tashkent Airport or a Tashkent hotel, are included.

What happens if Afrosiyob tickets are sold out?

Afrosiyob is popular, and seats may be unavailable when booking only 1–2 weeks ahead. A regular train or comfortable car transfer can be arranged instead; the alternative and its cost are agreed separately before booking. A longer journey reduces the time available for sightseeing.

Can we take an overnight train from Bukhara to Tashkent?

Yes. Both planned options are included: a daytime Afrosiyob with an overnight hotel stay in Tashkent, or an evening overnight train arriving on the morning of Day 10. The night on the train replaces the Tashkent hotel night. Choose your preferred option before booking.

Can we take this tour in winter?

Yes, the tour operates year-round. In winter, the programme accounts for shorter daylight hours, weather and mountain road conditions. We check access before the trip and agree on programme changes if a stop is inaccessible. Every mountain stop cannot be guaranteed in all weather conditions.

How do I book?

Send your dates and group size. A manager agrees the route, preferred stops, accommodation and dietary needs with you. After you confirm the itinerary and total price, pay a 20% deposit: we secure your guide and then reserve the agreed accommodation. The remaining 80% is due on day one; payment in US dollars is available. For direct Silk Travel bookings, cancellation 14 calendar days or more before the start receives a refund of 100% of the amount paid; with less notice, the 20% deposit is non-refundable. Third-party bookings follow their platform terms.

Are the tours private?

Yes. Every tour is for your own party, including solo travellers. We do not run join-in groups or add you to another booking. Your English-speaking guide adapts walks, stops and time at locations to your interests and ability within the agreed itinerary. Extra days, accommodation upgrades and optional paid activities are quoted separately.

What vehicles do you use?

All our vehicles are comfortable, air-conditioned and undergo technical inspections. For groups of up to 4 guests, we use off-road-capable Toyota Land Cruiser or Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs. For 5 guests, we use a Toyota Sequoia SUV. For groups of more than 5 guests, we use a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

What if prices differ by group size?

The price depends on group size. Send your dates and the number of people and a manager will confirm the exact offer.

Can you arrange halal meals, vegetarian food and food allergies?

Yes. Vegetarian and halal meals can be arranged in advance, with food adapted to guests’ preferences. Tell us about allergies before booking. A severe allergy requires individual discussion and confirmation of arrangements, including any needed controls against contact with the allergen. Check the chosen tour’s meal inclusions: meals are paid separately on some itineraries.

Do you provide child car seats?

Yes. We provide a child car seat on advance request. Tell us the child’s age and height when booking so we can prepare a suitable seat before the tour starts.

How can I stay connected during the trip?

On routes through Almaty, Bishkek or Karakol, you can buy a local SIM card along the way; tell us if you would like help. Mobile coverage depends on the operator and may be unavailable in remote mountain areas.

Great Guide, Great Tour

Had an excellent three day small group tour to Altyn Emel, Kaindy/Kolsai and Charyn Canyon with Tau. Tau was a terrific guide and I highly recommend him. He was friendly and a lot of fun. He has lots of knowledge of the area and was very generous with his time to allow us all the opportunity to enjoy the area. Also takes great photos!

The places we visited on the tour are beautiful and very worth the effort to travel there. Kazakhstan surpassed all expectations and loved my time there.

Fantastic guide, amazing trip!

Travelled with my mom in a group tour last June. We had Tau as our guide and it was a magical trip! Great driver and conversationalist, and he took us to some beautiful landscapes and also on some unreal hikes and climbs. Also very well prepared - borrowed many blankets when the temperatures got a little chilly, and had rain ponchos on hand when the weather turned rainy.

After we returned to Almaty, Tau provided great recommendations and showed some pretty neat bars / spots around town.

Hands-down, one of the highlights for summer 2019. Highly recommended. Tau will ensure that you have a great time in Kazakhstan!
