Burana Tower, Kyrgyzstan: how to get there and what to see
An 11th-century Silk Road minaret and the last remnant of the city of Balasagun.
About Burana Tower, Kyrgyzstan: how to get there and what to see
Burana Tower stands in the Chuy Valley and dates to the 10th–11th centuries. It is what remains of Balasagun, a Karakhanid-era city that declined after the Mongol invasions and was abandoned by the 15th century. It stands within City of Balasagun (Site of Burana), a component of the UNESCO World Heritage property Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor.
You can climb the tower for a wide view across the valley. Around it lie an open-air collection of balbal stone figures, the foundations of the old city and a small museum, so allow about an hour.
