About this tour

This ten-day Kazakhstan tour connects the lakes and canyons near Almaty with the wide-open landscapes of Mangystau. Visit the Aktau Mountains in Altyn-Emel, the Singing Dune, Charyn, Kaindy and Kolsai before flying west to Aktau city on the Caspian Sea.

Spend the first three days travelling by road through the Almaty region, staying in Basshi, Saty and Almaty. Fly to Aktau on day four and explore the city. Days 5–9 take you across Mangystau, from Shakpak Ata and Saura’s coast to the Torysh stone spheres, Sherkala, Tuzbair and Bozzhyra.

The five-day Mangystau section includes three nights in tents and one at Kogez ethno-village, followed by a hotel night back in Aktau. On day ten, return by air to Almaty, visit Medeu and Shymbulak when flight timings allow, and finish with a transfer to the airport or a hotel.

Your guide adapts walks to the group and introduces local food and everyday life along the way. The itinerary includes long drives, rough tracks and basic camping conditions. Travel dates, accommodation and preparations for the tent nights are agreed in advance.

Prices per person are USD 1,700 for four travellers, USD 2,100 for three, USD 2,400 for two and USD 4,500 for a solo traveller. Group rates are based on twin or double occupancy in the hotel section. Yurt and tent-camp arrangements are agreed in advance. Shymbulak cable-car tickets are included. Almaty–Aktau and Aktau–Almaty flights, along with additional hotel nights after the tour, are paid separately.

Detailed tour program

  1. Day 1Morning departure · guesthouse overnight

    Almaty — Altyn-Emel — Aktau Mountains — Basshi

From Almaty’s foothills to layered desert mountains

Leave Almaty in the morning for Basshi, the village used as a base for Altyn-Emel National Park. Allow around four hours for the transfer, with breaks along the way. After lunch, continue towards the Aktau Mountains; the final approach follows rough park tracks.

Walk among pale ridges and coloured slopes, with your guide choosing suitable paths and viewpoints. Return to Basshi for dinner and a guesthouse stay.

  2. Day 2A full day with long drives

Singing Dune — Charyn Canyon — Saty

A sand ridge in the morning, canyon light in the evening

After breakfast, drive for about an hour from Basshi to the Singing Dune. Kulan and goitered gazelles are sometimes seen in the park’s open landscapes. Climb as far along the dune as feels comfortable or explore its base. Wildlife sightings and the dune’s sound depend on natural conditions.

Have lunch in Basshi or en route, then continue towards Charyn Canyon. Aim for a walk around sunset, with viewpoints and distance chosen to suit the remaining daylight and the group’s energy. Afterwards, travel to Saty for dinner and a guesthouse stay, with a yurt option on request.

  3. Day 3Two mountain lakes · overnight in Almaty

Kaindy Lake — Lower Kolsai — Almaty

Submerged spruce trees and lakeside trails

After breakfast, head towards Kaindy Lake. An included local UAZ transfer reduces the walking distance from the parking area; the final approach is on foot. See spruce trunks rising from the water and explore accessible viewpoints. Horse riding can be arranged at an additional cost.

Return to Saty for lunch before visiting Lower Kolsai Lake. Walk down from the parking area and enjoy time beside the water, surrounded by mountain slopes. Boat hire is optional and paid separately. Return to Almaty for a hotel stay before the morning flight to the Caspian coast.

  4. Day 4Airport transfer · city tour · Aktau hotel

Fly from Almaty to Aktau and explore the city

From southeastern Kazakhstan to the Caspian Sea

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for a morning flight from Almaty to Aktau. Air tickets are paid separately, and a suitable departure is agreed when booking. Meet your local team on arrival and transfer into the city.

Explore Aktau on the arrival day, including a waterfront walk and accessible city sights. The length of the tour depends on your flight time. Have dinner and stay overnight in a hotel, ready for the five-day Mangystau route.

  5. Day 5Tent camping beside the Caspian Sea

Aktau — Shakpak Ata — Kapamsay — Zhygylgan — Saura

An underground mosque, canyons and the first camp

Leave Aktau for the underground mosque of Shakpak Ata. Before entering, your guide explains the dress requirements and respectful conduct at the site. Continue to Kapamsay Canyon for a walk and lunch among its rock walls.

Spend the afternoon at Zhygylgan, where fallen rock masses create an unusual coastal landscape. Finish at Saura Beach, set up the tent camp and enjoy dinner before a night beside the Caspian Sea.

  6. Day 6Overnight at Kogez ethno-village

    Saura — Torysh — Kyzylkala — Sherkala — Airakty — Kogez

Stone spheres and castle-like mountain silhouettes

Have breakfast by the sea and pack up camp. Examine the spherical rock concretions of Torysh, then continue to Kyzylkala for a walk and lunch. Stop for photographs of Sherkala Mountain, whose outline stands out across the open landscape.

Next, explore Airakty-Shomanay, a valley of rock formations resembling castles. Continue to Kogez ethno-village for dinner and an overnight stay. A bathhouse session can be arranged as an optional extra; availability and the current price are checked before the visit.

  7. Day 7Tent camp below Tuzbair’s cliffs

Kogez — Shetpe — Zharmysh — Tuzbair salt flat

From high viewpoints to the white plain

After breakfast at Kogez, travel through Shetpe to replenish supplies and refuel. Stop for lunch at a café in Zharmysh village before continuing towards Tuzbair.

First, take in the salt flat from the upper viewpoints, looking over broad white expanses and the plateau’s escarpments. Then descend towards the foot of the cliffs, set up camp and have dinner before a night in tents. Access to the lower areas depends on ground conditions; after rain, the route is adjusted with your guide.

  8. Day 8Upper viewpoints and the descent below

Tuzbair — Bozzhyra panoramas — tent camp

A day among chalk cliffs and isolated rock formations

Have breakfast at Tuzbair, pack the tents and head for Bozzhyra. Explore its upper panoramic viewpoints, stopping for photographs and short walks. Lunch is planned with views of the chalk formations.

Descend towards Bozzhyra to see the landscape from a different level. Prepare dinner and spend another night in tents. Your guide selects the campsite and accessible approaches according to weather and road conditions.

  9. Day 9Return to the city after four nights on the route

Bozzhyra — Bokty — Tiramisu Canyon — Zhanaozen — Aktau

The final landscapes of the expedition section

After breakfast at Bozzhyra, pack up camp and travel to Bokty Mountain. Continue to Tiramisu Canyon, where colourful layers form striking bands across the slopes. Allow time for photographs and walks on accessible terrain.

Stop for lunch at a café in Zhanaozen, then return to Aktau and check into a hotel. This city overnight provides a break after five days among canyons and plateaus, before the morning flight to Almaty. Arrival time depends on road conditions and the length of stops.

  10. Day 10Tour ends at Almaty airport or your chosen hotel

Fly to Almaty — Medeu and Shymbulak — final transfer

    Finish with a mountain panorama

After breakfast and an airport transfer, fly from Aktau to Almaty. The return air ticket is paid separately. Choose an early arrival to allow time for the mountain excursion, and agree the timing of any onward flight before booking.

On arrival in Almaty, travel to Medeu and ride the Shymbulak cable cars to around 3,200 metres, subject to lift operation and suitable weather. Finish with a transfer to the airport or your chosen Almaty hotel. Any extra night after the programme is paid separately; sightseeing time is arranged around flights and road conditions.

Stops and walking time may change with weather, road conditions and daylight. Almaty–Aktau and Aktau–Almaty flights are paid separately. Coordinate flights with the ground itinerary before buying tickets; the day 10 Shymbulak visit depends on arrival time and cable-car operation. The Mangystau section includes three tent nights and one night at Kogez ethno-village.

Great Guide, Great Tour

Had an excellent three day small group tour to Altyn Emel, Kaindy/Kolsai and Charyn Canyon with Tau. Tau was a terrific guide and I highly recommend him. He was friendly and a lot of fun. He has lots of knowledge of the area and was very generous with his time to allow us all the opportunity to enjoy the area. Also takes great photos!

The places we visited on the tour are beautiful and very worth the effort to travel there. Kazakhstan surpassed all expectations and loved my time there.

Fantastic guide, amazing trip!

Travelled with my mom in a group tour last June. We had Tau as our guide and it was a magical trip! Great driver and conversationalist, and he took us to some beautiful landscapes and also on some unreal hikes and climbs. Also very well prepared - borrowed many blankets when the temperatures got a little chilly, and had rain ponchos on hand when the weather turned rainy.

After we returned to Almaty, Tau provided great recommendations and showed some pretty neat bars / spots around town.

Hands-down, one of the highlights for summer 2019. Highly recommended. Tau will ensure that you have a great time in Kazakhstan!

A thrilling 6 day tour

“He tailored and adjusted the tour schedule according to our preference.”

Two regions of Kazakhstan in one journey

Start with southeastern Kazakhstan’s contrasts: Altyn-Emel’s dry slopes, Charyn’s sculpted canyon and lakes framed by spruce forest. The first three days link the Almaty region’s main natural sights before a return to the city for your flight.

In western Kazakhstan, both the scenery and pace change. Aktau is the gateway to Mangystau, where days unfold among isolated rock formations, chalk escarpments and salt flats, and several nights are spent in tent camps.

Five days in Mangystau, from the Caspian to Bozzhyra

Shakpak Ata, Kapamsay and Zhygylgan lead towards the sea at Saura. The route then continues through Torysh’s spherical stones, Kyzylkala, Sherkala and Airakty-Shomanay, with an overnight stop at Kogez.

Explore Tuzbair and Bozzhyra from upper viewpoints and lower approaches when ground conditions allow. Bokty and Kyzylkup’s striped slopes, also known as Tiramisu Canyon, complete this section. A hotel night in Aktau follows the return drive.

Walking, driving and accommodation

This itinerary suits travellers interested in varied natural regions and time with a local guide. Walks can be shortened, but distances between sights still mean long drives. Three nights in Mangystau are spent in tents; discuss camp facilities and equipment with us before booking.

Preparing for different landscapes

Layers, comfortable shoes and sun and wind protection are useful in both the mountains and Mangystau’s open terrain. Your guide explains clothing and conduct requirements before visiting Shakpak Ata. Dates and access to natural sites are agreed around weather, road conditions and practical camping arrangements.

Return to Almaty and finish in the mountains

Day ten combines the flight from Aktau with Medeu and Shymbulak. This finish requires an early arrival and enough time before any onward departure. Before you buy air tickets, we coordinate flight times, sightseeing and your final transfer to Almaty airport or a hotel.

Questions about this tour

How are the ten days arranged?

Days 1–3 cover Altyn-Emel, the Singing Dune, Charyn, Kaindy and Kolsai, returning to Almaty. Day 4 is the flight to Aktau and a city tour. Days 5–9 follow the five-day Mangystau route. On day 10, fly to Almaty, visit Medeu and Shymbulak when timings allow, and finish with an airport or hotel transfer. The programme includes nine nights.

How much does the ten-day tour cost?

Prices per person are USD 1,700 for four travellers, USD 2,100 for three, USD 2,400 for two and USD 4,500 for a solo traveller. Group rates are based on twin or double occupancy in the hotel section. Yurt and tent-camp arrangements are agreed in advance. Shymbulak cable-car tickets are included. Almaty–Aktau and Aktau–Almaty flights, along with additional hotel nights after the tour, are paid separately.

Which air tickets are paid separately?

Almaty–Aktau and Aktau–Almaty flights, as well as international air tickets, are excluded. Agree flights with us before buying tickets: Aktau sightseeing is planned on day four, and Shymbulak plus the final transfer on day ten.

Where are the nine nights spent?

One night each in Basshi, Saty and Almaty, plus two hotel nights in Aktau before and after the Mangystau route. There is one night at Kogez ethno-village and three tent nights at Saura, Tuzbair and Bozzhyra. A yurt can be requested in Saty. Your guide selects exact campsites according to local conditions.

What facilities are available at the camps?

The camps are at natural sites with basic outdoor conditions. Washing and toilet arrangements and the equipment provided are confirmed before booking. Yurts may have shared bathroom facilities. Bring comfortable walking shoes, warm layers and protection from sun and wind.

Can walks be shortened?

Yes. Your guide chooses accessible viewpoints and walking distances to suit the group. Long drives and uneven tracks remain part of the trip. Tell us in advance about children, mobility needs and comfort requirements.

Is Shymbulak always possible on the last day?

We plan the visit after an early arrival in Almaty, subject to suitable weather and cable-car operation. The time available depends on your flight, traffic and any onward departure. If you stay in Almaty, the tour ends with a hotel transfer; additional accommodation is paid separately.

Are the Aktau Mountains and Aktau city the same place?

No. The Aktau Mountains are in Altyn-Emel National Park in southeastern Kazakhstan and are visited on day one. Aktau city is on the Caspian coast in western Kazakhstan; you fly there from Almaty before the five-day Mangystau section.

How do I book?

Send your dates and group size. A manager agrees the route, preferred stops, accommodation and dietary needs with you. Third-party bookings follow their platform terms.

Are the tours private?

Yes. Every tour is for your own party, including solo travellers. We do not run join-in groups or add you to another booking. Your English-speaking guide adapts walks, stops and time at locations to your interests and ability within the agreed itinerary. Extra days, accommodation upgrades and optional paid activities are quoted separately.

A severe allergy requires individual discussion and confirmation of arrangements, including any needed controls against contact with the allergen. Check the chosen tour’s meal inclusions: meals are paid separately on some itineraries.

Do you provide child car seats?

Yes. We provide a child car seat on advance request. Tell us the child’s age and height when booking so we can prepare a suitable seat before the tour starts.
