Song-Kol Lake: yurt stays, access and seasonal routes
Plan a mountain-lake visit with clear information on the yurt season, shared facilities and weather-dependent access.
About Song-Kol Lake: yurt stays, access and seasonal routes
Song-Kol, also written Son-Kul, is a mountain-lake stop on our longer Kyrgyzstan journeys. In the seven-day Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan programme, the approach from Kadji-Sai follows Ak-Sai and Kochkor. Allow approximately 5–6 hours for this demanding mountain transfer; road conditions and stops affect the actual time.
A yurt night by Song-Kol Lake is normally planned from late May to early September. Showers and toilets are shared facilities outside the yurts. The Song-Kol yurts are unheated; bring warm clothing for the night. At other times, a lake visit may be possible with accommodation in Kochkor, but heavy rain or snow can make the road inaccessible and require a change of route.

Good to know
When are yurt stays at Song-Kol available?
Normally from late May to early September, subject to weather and camp availability. Outside that period, we plan accommodation in Kochkor; a lake visit is possible only if the road and weather allow it.
Do the Song-Kol yurts have showers, toilets and heating?
Showers and toilets are shared facilities outside the Song-Kol yurts. These yurts are unheated, so bring warm clothing for the night. Tell us your accommodation needs before booking.
How long is the approach from Kadji-Sai?
Allow approximately 5–6 hours via Ak-Sai and Kochkor on the seven-day itinerary. This is a demanding mountain transfer, and the actual time depends on the road and stops.
Which tours visit Song-Kol?
The 6-Day Kyrgyzstan Photo Tour and 8-Day Epic Kyrgyzstan Tour both start and end in Bishkek, visit Song-Kol and plan a yurt night there, subject to seasonal access. The seven-day Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan tour, 18-day Off-Road Adventure and 38-day Five Stans Adventure also include the lake. The separate six- and eight-day Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan tours from Almaty do not visit Song-Kol.
How Song-Kol fits into a Kyrgyzstan itinerary
The seven-day Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan route travels from southern Issyk-Kul through Ak-Sai and Kochkor to Song-Kol, then continues towards Chon-Kemin and Bishkek. The 18-day Offroad and 38-day Five Stans itineraries also visit the lake, with different onward routes.
For a Kyrgyzstan-only round trip from Bishkek, both the 6-Day Kyrgyzstan Photo Tour and the 8-Day Epic Kyrgyzstan Tour plan a yurt night at Song-Kol. The separate six- and eight-day Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan programmes from Almaty do not include the lake. Check seasonal access and the full itinerary before booking.
Yurt season and the Kochkor alternative
Yurt overnights normally run from late May to early September, subject to conditions. Outside that period, accommodation in Kochkor can be paired with a lake visit only when the road and weather permit. Heavy rain or snow may prevent the visit altogether; the guide then agrees a revised programme.
Comfort and preparation for a Song-Kol stay
Expect shared showers and toilets outside the Song-Kol yurts, rather than an en-suite bathroom. These Song-Kol yurts are unheated. Bring warm layers for the evening and night, wind and rain protection, walking shoes and personal toiletries. Discuss walking distances and any optional horse riding before departure; optional rides are paid separately.
