About this tour

This week-long route brings together Kazakhstan’s canyons and forest lakes with Kyrgyzstan’s Issyk-Kul shoreline and highland Song-Kol. Start in Almaty, travel through Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy, cross at Karkara towards Karakol, and return to Kazakhstan through Korday.

The first three days lead through mountain scenery to Kadji-Sai, then the route continues via Ak-Sai and Kochkor towards Song-Kol. From late May to early September, stay in a yurt by the lake; at other times, visit if weather permits and stay in Kochkor. Continue to Chon-Kemin and Bishkek before returning to Almaty. The journey lasts seven days and includes six nights.

This private road tour combines driving with walks adjusted to your interests and ability. The Kadji-Sai to Song-Kol transfer takes approximately 5–6 hours on demanding mountain roads, with stops adding to the day. The Song-Kol camp has shared showers and toilets outside the yurts.

Prices per person are $1,220 for four travellers, $1,470 for three, $1,730 for two and $2,990 for a solo guest. Group rates are based on twin or double occupancy in the hotel section. Yurt arrangements and available travel dates are agreed before booking.

Detailed tour program

  1. Day 1Saty overnight · guesthouse or yurt

Almaty — Charyn Canyon — Kolsai Lake — Saty

From red rock walls to a forest-fringed lake

Leave Almaty for Charyn Canyon, where your guide selects a walk suited to the group. The route down to the river and back is around 7 km; a walk along the upper viewpoints is about 3 km. Allow time to rest over tea or coffee with views of the canyon.

Continue to Lower Kolsai Lake for a lakeside walk beneath wooded mountain slopes. This first day introduces the changing landscapes of southeastern Kazakhstan. Have dinner and stay in Saty, choosing a guesthouse or a yurt by prior arrangement.

  2. Day 2Cross from Kazakhstan into Kyrgyzstan

Kaindy Lake — Karkara border — Karakol

Submerged spruce trees before the border crossing

After breakfast, visit Kaindy Lake and its spruce trunks rising above the water. A local UAZ transfer shortens the approach from the parking area. Explore accessible viewpoints on foot, with walking distances adapted to the group.

Travel via Kegen to the Karkara border crossing, then continue to Karakol in Kyrgyzstan. The time required depends partly on border procedures. If the schedule allows, enjoy a short introduction to the city before dinner and a hotel stay with a private bathroom.

  3. Day 3Southern Issyk-Kul · overnight in Kadji-Sai

    Jeti-Oguz — Arabel — Skazka Canyon — Kadji-Sai

Red cliffs, highland scenery and a lakeside finish

From Karakol, head to the red formations of Jeti-Oguz for a walk and photographs. Continue through the Barskoon area towards Arabel Plateau when the season, weather and road conditions permit. If the highland section is inaccessible, spend longer at other stops.

Later, explore Skazka, or Fairytale Canyon, with your guide choosing a path among its coloured slopes to suit the remaining daylight. Finish in Kadji-Sai on Issyk-Kul’s southern shore, with dinner and an agreed guesthouse or yurt-camp stay.

  4. Day 4Approximately 5–6 hours on the road · seasonal overnight arrangement

    Kadji-Sai — Ak-Sai — Kochkor — Song-Kol

    From Issyk-Kul to highland pastures

After breakfast, meet an eagle handler and learn about the local hunting tradition before visiting Ak-Sai Canyon. Continue through Kochkor towards Song-Kol Lake. This is a demanding mountain drive: allow around 5–6 hours on the road, with sightseeing and breaks extending the full day.

From late May to early September, have dinner and stay overnight in a yurt camp by Song-Kol. The Song-Kol yurts are unheated; showers and toilets are shared facilities outside. At other times, visit the lake without an overnight stay when weather permits, then stay in Kochkor. Heavy rain or snowfall can make Song-Kol inaccessible, requiring an itinerary adjustment.

  5. Day 5Guesthouse overnight in the valley

    Song-Kol or Kochkor — drive to Chon-Kemin

From the highland section to the valley

During the yurt-camp season, have breakfast at Song-Kol and spend a little time by the lake before departing for Chon-Kemin. If the previous night was in Kochkor, start there and continue towards the valley. Departure time and stops are arranged around weather and road conditions.

Your guide plans rest stops along the road. On arrival, settle into a guesthouse, have dinner and unwind after the drive. Rooms here have a private shower and toilet.

  6. Day 6History and mountain scenery · Bishkek hotel

    Chon-Kemin — Burana — Ala-Archa — Bishkek

Your final full day in Kyrgyzstan

After breakfast, travel from Chon-Kemin towards Bishkek. The plan includes Burana Tower and a walk in Ala-Archa National Park. Weather, traffic and the group’s pace may mean prioritising one of these visits.

In Bishkek, choose city stops around your interests and the time available: central streets, a bazaar or an evening walk. Traffic can limit sightseeing, so the programme leaves room to adjust. Finish with dinner and an overnight hotel stay.

  7. Day 7Finish at your hotel or the airport

Bishkek — Korday border — Almaty

    Return to Kazakhstan

After breakfast, drive to the Korday border crossing and enter Kazakhstan. Continue towards Almaty with rest and lunch stops along the way. Arrival depends on border queues and traffic, so agree any onward flight time with us in advance.

If time allows, finish with a short walk in central Almaty before your hotel or airport transfer. Ending the journey in Bishkek can be arranged in advance. Additional nights after the tour are paid separately.

From late May to early September, stay in a yurt at Song-Kol. At other times, visit the lake when weather permits and stay overnight in Kochkor. Heavy rain or snowfall can prevent access to Song-Kol and require programme changes. Arabel depends on season and weather. Border procedures, traffic and daylight also affect timing. Song-Kol has shared showers and toilets outside the yurts.

Great Guide, Great Tour

Had an excellent three day small group tour to Altyn Emel, Kaindy/Kolsai and Charyn Canyon with Tau. Tau was a terrific guide and I highly recommend him. He was friendly and a lot of fun. He has lots of knowledge of the area and was very generous with his time to allow us all the opportunity to enjoy the area. Also takes great photos!

The places we visited on the tour are beautiful and very worth the effort to travel there. Kazakhstan surpassed all expectations and loved my time there.

Fantastic guide, amazing trip!

Travelled with my mom in a group tour last June. We had Tau as our guide and it was a magical trip! Great driver and conversationalist, and he took us to some beautiful landscapes and also on some unreal hikes and climbs. Also very well prepared - borrowed many blankets when the temperatures got a little chilly, and had rain ponchos on hand when the weather turned rainy.

After we returned to Almaty, Tau provided great recommendations and showed some pretty neat bars / spots around town.

Hands-down, one of the highlights for summer 2019. Highly recommended. Tau will ensure that you have a great time in Kazakhstan!

A thrilling 6 day tour

“He tailored and adjusted the tour schedule according to our preference.”

From Charyn Canyon to Song-Kol in one week

The route links two distinct mountain regions of Central Asia. In Kazakhstan, explore Charyn’s red walls, Kolsai’s wooded shore and Kaindy’s submerged spruce trees. Across the border, the scenery changes through Karakol, southern Issyk-Kul and Ak-Sai Canyon, before the road via Kochkor opens onto Song-Kol’s highland landscape.

Starting and finishing in Almaty, the trip uses the Karkara and Korday crossings to form a continuous road itinerary. Along the way, your guide introduces local food and culture while making room for rest breaks and photographs.

A night in a yurt at Song-Kol

The yurt stay is a separate chapter between Kadji-Sai and Chon-Kemin. After the long approach, spend an evening near the lake and wake in the highlands. Camp accommodation has shared showers and toilets outside the yurts, an important detail to consider when discussing your comfort needs and choosing the trip.

Lake-side yurt overnights run from late May to early September. Outside this period, stay in Kochkor and visit Song-Kol during the day when weather allows. Heavy rain or snowfall may prevent access, so the exact plan follows local conditions.

A private guided road trip from Almaty

Your guide helps shape walking sections, photo stops and rest breaks. At Charyn, upper viewpoints offer an alternative to the longer river walk; lakeside visits can also be adjusted. Mountain transfers remain a substantial part of the week, including the demanding road to Song-Kol.

Preparing for borders and mountain roads

Cross between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan twice: at Karkara on the way to Karakol and at Korday on the return to Almaty. Before travelling, check entry requirements for your nationality and coordinate onward flights. Access to Song-Kol and Arabel, along with the exact daily schedule, depends on season and road conditions.

Six overnight stops across Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan

Stay in Saty, Karakol, Kadji-Sai, Song-Kol or Kochkor, Chon-Kemin and Bishkek, following a continuous route without returning to Almaty midway. Guesthouses, hotels, seasonal accommodation and the final transfer after day seven are agreed when booking.
