Detailed tour program

  1. Day 1≈ 8 h driving and walking

    Charyn Canyon and Kolsai Lake

    Morning

Meet your guide in Almaty at around 08:00 at your hotel or the airport, as arranged. Travel to Charyn Canyon and explore the Valley of Castles. The standard walk to the river and back is about 7 km; a shorter route along the upper viewpoints is about 3 km return.

    Midday

Pause for tea or coffee and a rest at a restaurant overlooking the canyon. Continue towards Kolsai Lake through the landscapes of southeastern Kazakhstan.

    Afternoon

Walk beside the first Kolsai Lake, with time for photographs and views of the forested mountain slopes. Your guide adjusts the walk to the group's pace.

    Evening

Dinner and overnight in Saty village. Stay in a guesthouse or choose a yurt; rooms have a private shower and toilet, while yurt facilities may be shared.

  2. Day 2≈ 6–7 h driving and walking

Kaindy Lake, Kegen–Karkyra border and Karakol

    Morning

After breakfast, visit Kaindy Lake and its submerged tree trunks. Explore the available walking route with your guide. Horse riding is optional and paid separately.

    Midday

Return to Saty for lunch before continuing towards the border. The schedule leaves room for the journey into Kyrgyzstan.

    Afternoon

Travel towards Karakol via the Kegen–Karkyra border crossing, with a viewpoint stop by the Bestyubinsk reservoir as time allows. The time needed for border formalities varies.

    Evening

Arrive in Karakol for dinner and an overnight stay in a hotel with a private bathroom.

  3. Day 3≈ 7 h driving and walking

    Jeti-Oguz, Arabel and Fairytale Canyon

    Morning

Leave Karakol for Jeti-Oguz and its red Seven Bulls rock formations. Take a walk and stop for photographs before continuing along the south side of Issyk-Kul.

    Midday

Travel via Barskoon towards Arabel Plateau when the season and weather allow. Arabel is omitted in winter; heavy rain or delays can also prevent the visit. Lunch is planned along the route.

    Afternoon

Explore the colourful sandstone formations of Fairytale Canyon, also known as Skazka. In suitable conditions, Jeti-Oguz, Arabel and this canyon fit into the same day; your guide adjusts the order and time at each stop when needed.

    Evening

Dinner and overnight in Kadji-Sai on the south shore of Issyk-Kul. Choose a guesthouse or a yurt; yurt bathrooms may be shared.

  4. Day 4≈ 7 h driving and walking

Eagle demonstration, Aksai and Konorchek canyons

    Morning

Meet an eagle hunter and learn about the tradition of working with golden eagles. The demonstration is included in the tour price.

    Midday

Walk among the formations of Aksai Canyon, then continue towards Balykchy for lunch. Choose a shorter walk or spend more time exploring, depending on your interests and the day's conditions.

    Afternoon

Visit Konorchek Canyon for red-rock scenery and a walk adapted to the group's ability and time available. Discuss the walking route with your guide, especially if travelling with children or older guests.

    Evening

Continue to Chon-Kemin for dinner and a night in a guesthouse with a private shower and toilet.

  5. Day 5≈ 4 h driving and walking

    Burana Tower, Ala-Archa and Bishkek

    Morning

Leave Chon-Kemin and visit Burana Tower to explore a stop connected with the region's Silk Road history.

    Midday

Continue towards Ala-Archa for mountain views and a walk. We aim to include both Burana and Ala-Archa; weather, traffic and your preferred pace may mean prioritising one of them.

    Afternoon

Take a short introduction to Bishkek, choosing the historic centre, a bazaar or a city walk with your guide. Heavy traffic can limit how many places fit into the afternoon, so agree your priorities rather than expecting every city landmark.

    Evening

Dinner and overnight in a Bishkek hotel with a private bathroom. If you prefer to finish the tour in Bishkek, the next day can be devoted to a fuller city visit instead of the return journey.

  6. Day 6≈ 5 h driving and walking

Return to Almaty or finish in Bishkek

    Morning

After breakfast, return to Kazakhstan through the Korday border crossing. The arrival time in Almaty depends on border formalities and road traffic.

    Midday

If time permits, take a guided walk through Almaty's historic centre. The city stops are chosen according to traffic and the time remaining. A visit to Tamgaly-Tas can be discussed as an optional request in advance; it is not part of the standard programme.

    End of the tour

The tour usually finishes around 18:00 with drop-off at your hotel or Almaty airport, subject to border and traffic delays. Alternatively, arrange to finish in Bishkek and use the day for a more complete city tour. Agree the finish city when booking.

Daily time estimates combine driving and walking. A full sightseeing day averages around 10 hours, excluding dinner and check-in. Your guide adapts stops to your interests, weather, daylight and traffic. Arabel is omitted in winter; other inaccessible stops may also be skipped. Border procedures can affect the final day's timing. Finish in Bishkek instead of Almaty by prior arrangement.

Great Guide, Great Tour

Had an excellent three day small group tour to Altyn Emel, Kaindy/Kolsai and Charyn Canyon with Tau. Tau was a terrific guide and I highly recommend him. He was friendly and a lot of fun. He has lots of knowledge of the area and was very generous with his time to allow us all the opportunity to enjoy the area. Also takes great photos!

The places we visited on the tour are beautiful and very worth the effort to travel there. Kazakhstan surpassed all expectations and loved my time there.

Fantastic guide, amazing trip!

Travelled with my mom in a group tour last June. We had Tau as our guide and it was a magical trip! Great driver and conversationalist, and he took us to some beautiful landscapes and also on some unreal hikes and climbs. Also very well prepared - borrowed many blankets when the temperatures got a little chilly, and had rain ponchos on hand when the weather turned rainy.

After we returned to Almaty, Tau provided great recommendations and showed some pretty neat bars / spots around town.

Hands-down, one of the highlights for summer 2019. Highly recommended. Tau will ensure that you have a great time in Kazakhstan!

A thrilling 6 day tour

“He tailored and adjusted the tour schedule according to our preference.”

A private journey shaped around your interests

Some guests want longer walks and quiet viewpoints; others are drawn to history, everyday life and local food. Tell your guide what interests you. Even during the trip, you can discuss changing stops or spending longer at a favourite place, within the time available, weather conditions and daylight. For an itinerary that also includes Altyn-Emel, compare our 8-day Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan tour.

Silk Travel's approach is to make travelling with your guide feel like travelling with a friend. Usually one guide accompanies the whole journey; on some departures, different members of our team guide the Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan sections. The tour remains private to your party.

Five nights: hotels, guesthouses and yurts

Stay in a guesthouse or yurt in Saty, a hotel in Karakol, a guesthouse or yurt in Kadji-Sai by Issyk-Kul, a guesthouse in Chon-Kemin and a hotel in Bishkek. We select accommodation for its service and value, rather than its label alone.

Hotel and guesthouse rooms have a private shower and toilet. Yurts may have shared bathroom facilities. A standard yurt stay can be arranged by preference; upgraded hotels and premium yurts cost extra. Tell us your accommodation preferences when requesting a quote.

Vehicles and group size

We use comfortable, reliable vehicles checked for the journey. Our usual SUVs are a Toyota Sequoia for up to five passengers, a Toyota Prado 150 for up to four, or a Toyota Land Cruiser for up to four. For a larger private group, we can arrange a 12-seat Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Send your party size and luggage details so we can confirm the appropriate vehicle.

Walking distances and daily pace

The activity level ranges from easy to moderate. At Charyn Canyon, the standard walk down the canyon to the river and back is about 7 km; a shorter walk along the upper viewpoints is about 3 km return. Your guide can shorten walks for families with children or older guests, or allow more walking for active travellers. The 4–8-hour daily estimates cover driving and walking together. A full sightseeing day averages around 10 hours, excluding dinner and hotel check-in.

Seasons and planning your departure

The tour runs throughout the year with seasonal changes. Arabel Plateau is omitted in winter; other inaccessible places are skipped, with more time at available stops as daylight permits. In the warmer season, Jeti-Oguz, Arabel and Fairytale Canyon can usually be visited on one day, but heavy rain or delays may prevent the Arabel visit. Send your dates, party size, walking preferences and preferred finish city—Almaty or Bishkek—to receive a programme and final quote.

Questions about this tour

When does the US$1,020 per-person price apply?

The starting price is US$1,020 per person for a private party of four, with two guests sharing each room. The final quote depends on your party size and accommodation choices. Premium hotels and upgraded yurts cost extra.

Are accommodation, meals and the eagle demonstration included?

Yes. The standard tour includes five nights of accommodation, all meals, entrance fees for the programme, the eagle demonstration, guide service, transport and fuel. Optional horse riding, accommodation upgrades and personal purchases are extra. International flights and travel insurance are not included.

Will we have the same guide in both countries?

Usually the same guide accompanies the whole trip. On some departures, one guide looks after you in Kazakhstan and another member of the Silk Travel team guides the Kyrgyzstan section. The itinerary and walking pace are adapted to your private party.

Can families and older guests choose shorter walks?

Yes. The activity level can be adjusted from easy to moderate. At Charyn Canyon, the usual walk to the river and back is about 7 km, while the upper viewpoints offer a shorter route of about 3 km return. Discuss your preferred walking pace with the guide.

Does the six-day tour run in winter?

Yes, with a modified route. Arabel Plateau is skipped in winter. Other places may also be inaccessible because of weather or road conditions. Your guide spends more time at available stops where the shorter daylight hours allow; the full warm-season itinerary is not guaranteed.

Do rooms and yurts have private bathrooms?

Hotel and guesthouse rooms have their own shower and toilet. Yurts may use shared bathroom facilities. The route includes guesthouse or yurt stays in Saty and Kadji-Sai, a guesthouse in Chon-Kemin and hotels in Karakol and Bishkek. Discuss yurt preferences or upgrades when booking.

Can the tour finish in Bishkek instead of Almaty?

Yes. Arrange a Bishkek finish when booking. You can then use the final day for a fuller Bishkek city tour instead of returning to Kazakhstan. On the standard Almaty finish, drop-off is at your hotel or the airport, usually around 18:00, depending on the border and traffic.

Which border crossings does the tour use?

The usual route enters Kyrgyzstan through Kegen–Karkyra after the lake visits in Kazakhstan and returns from Bishkek through Korday. Border procedures and road conditions affect journey times. The final walk in Almaty is included when time permits, with the stops chosen according to traffic.

How do I book?

Choose a tour and send your dates and group size. Once the itinerary and price are agreed, pay a 20% deposit. The remaining 80% is payable on the first day of the tour. Cancellation 30 days or more before the start receives a full deposit refund; cancellation 15–29 days before the start receives a 50% deposit refund; the deposit is non-refundable 14 days or fewer before the start.

Are the tours private?

Yes. Every tour is private, with no large groups, and the itinerary can be adjusted.

What vehicles do you use?

All our vehicles are comfortable, air-conditioned and undergo technical inspections. For groups of up to 4 guests, we use off-road-capable Toyota Land Cruiser or Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs. For 5 guests, we use a Toyota Sequoia SUV. For groups of more than 5 guests, we use a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

What if prices differ by group size?

The price depends on group size. Send your dates and the number of people and a manager will confirm the exact offer.
