About this tour

Discover Almaty and its surrounding landscapes in five days, moving from the historic centre to Big Almaty Lake, Shymbulak’s mountain panoramas, Charyn Canyon and forest-fringed lakes. The itinerary begins with an airport meeting and ends with a transfer to Almaty airport or a city hotel.

Spend the first two days in Almaty and the nearby mountains. On day three, travel through Charyn to Saty and Lower Kolsai. Visit Kaindy on day four before lunch in Saty and the drive to Turgen for a guesthouse or hotel overnight. The final day combines Assy Plateau, a trout-farm lunch and Issyk Lake.

Your guide adjusts walks and viewpoint stops to the group. Assy is usually accessible from May to October; weather, roads and cable-car operation affect the schedule. Agree flight times in advance. If necessary, we can shorten the final day’s sightseeing to take you to the airport earlier.

Prices per person are $820 for four travellers, $1,010 for three, $1,270 for two and $2,190 for a solo guest. Group rates are based on twin or double occupancy. Four nights, meals from the arrival day, the Big Almaty Lake taxi, Shymbulak cable cars, the local Kaindy UAZ and scheduled entrance fees are included.

Detailed tour program

  1. Day 1Airport pickup · overnight in an Almaty hotel

Arrival in Almaty and city sightseeing

Panfilov Park, Zenkov Cathedral and the Green Bazaar

Meet your guide at Almaty airport and begin exploring the city. Visit Panfilov Park, the Ascension Cathedral, commonly known as Zenkov Cathedral, and the Green Bazaar. This introductory walk connects the historic centre with everyday city life.

The order of sightseeing and hotel check-in is arranged around your flight. Walking time and the bazaar visit depend on your arrival and opening hours. Stay overnight in an Almaty hotel.

  2. Day 2A full mountain day · overnight in Almaty

Big Almaty Lake — Medeu — Shymbulak

The lake first, then the cable cars

After breakfast, your guide drives you to the transfer point near the Ayusay Visitor Centre. From there, a specialised local private taxi takes you to Big Almaty Lake; this transfer is included in the tour price. Allow around 40 minutes uphill, 1.5–2 hours beside the lake and around 40 minutes back to the transfer point, depending on access and road conditions. Afterwards, have lunch at a restaurant serving traditional cuisine.

Continue to Medeu and take the cable cars up to Shymbulak. When all sections are operating and weather allows, reach around 3,200 metres. Return to Almaty in the evening for dinner and an overnight hotel stay.

  3. Day 3Lunch in Saty · guesthouse overnight

Almaty — Charyn Canyon — Kolsai Lake — Saty

A morning canyon walk and an afternoon mountain lake

After breakfast, leave Almaty for Charyn Canyon. Choose a walk according to the group’s ability and the time available: view the Valley of Castles from above or descend into the canyon. Your guide helps pace the day.

Continue to Saty for lunch, then visit Lower Kolsai Lake. Walk beside the water and relax among forested mountain slopes before returning to Saty for dinner and a guesthouse stay.

  4. Day 4Lunch in Saty · overnight in Turgen

Kaindy Lake — Saty — Turgen

Submerged spruce trees before the next valley

After breakfast, visit Kaindy Lake. A local UAZ can shorten the approach from the parking area, followed by the remaining walk to the water. Explore accessible viewpoints and photograph the spruce trunks standing in the lake.

Return to Saty for lunch, then drive to Turgen with rest stops along the way. Stay overnight in a guesthouse or hotel in Turgen, ready to continue towards Assy Plateau the following day.

  5. Day 5Final day · airport or hotel transfer

Assy Plateau — trout farm — Issyk Lake — Almaty

Open mountain scenery and a lakeside finish

From Turgen, travel towards Assy Plateau, usually accessible from May to October. Walks and photo stops depend on weather and the mountain road. Outside this period, the day’s programme is agreed separately. Return to Turgen for lunch at a trout farm.

Visit Issyk Lake before continuing to Almaty, where the tour ends with an airport or hotel transfer. Agree your flight time in advance: if needed, we can shorten part of the sightseeing programme and take you to the airport earlier. The day’s timing also takes road conditions into account.

Agree arrival and departure times in advance. Big Almaty Lake, Shymbulak and Assy depend on weather and access. Assy is usually accessible from May to October; other dates require a separately agreed daily programme. Day 5 sightseeing can be shortened for an earlier airport transfer.

Great Guide, Great Tour

Had an excellent three day small group tour to Altyn Emel, Kaindy/Kolsai and Charyn Canyon with Tau. Tau was a terrific guide and I highly recommend him. He was friendly and a lot of fun. He has lots of knowledge of the area and was very generous with his time to allow us all the opportunity to enjoy the area. Also takes great photos!

The places we visited on the tour are beautiful and very worth the effort to travel there. Kazakhstan surpassed all expectations and loved my time there.

Fantastic guide, amazing trip!

Travelled with my mom in a group tour last June. We had Tau as our guide and it was a magical trip! Great driver and conversationalist, and he took us to some beautiful landscapes and also on some unreal hikes and climbs. Also very well prepared - borrowed many blankets when the temperatures got a little chilly, and had rain ponchos on hand when the weather turned rainy.

After we returned to Almaty, Tau provided great recommendations and showed some pretty neat bars / spots around town.

Hands-down, one of the highlights for summer 2019. Highly recommended. Tau will ensure that you have a great time in Kazakhstan!

Five days in Almaty, from city streets to mountain lakes

Panfilov Park, Zenkov Cathedral and the Green Bazaar introduce the city on day one. The next morning starts at Big Almaty Lake, followed by a traditional lunch and the drive to Medeu and Shymbulak. This sequence gives the lake the morning slot and the cable cars the afternoon.

Kolsai, Kaindy and Issyk appear at different stages of the trip, offering contrasting experiences: a wooded shore, submerged spruce trunks and a final lakeside stop before returning to the city.

Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy with a stay in Saty

Day three begins at Charyn Canyon. After the walk, continue to Saty for lunch and then to Lower Kolsai. Returning to the guesthouse for dinner avoids an evening journey back to Almaty during this part of the route.

Kaindy is the focus of the fourth morning. After the lake visit and lunch in Saty, continue towards Turgen for the next stage of the programme.

Assy Plateau and lunch at a trout farm

The final day explores Turgen and its mountain surroundings. Assy Plateau is usually accessible from May to October, subject to weather and road conditions. Return for a trout-farm lunch, visit Issyk Lake and travel back to Almaty. In other months, this day’s programme is agreed separately.

Choosing a comfortable pace

Walk lengths, photo stops and approaches to viewpoints can be adapted. Tell your guide in advance about children, mobility needs and your group’s interests. Even with shorter walks, the Charyn, Kaindy and Assy days remain full, with substantial time on the road.

Arrivals, departures and your final transfer

Arrival-day sightseeing depends on your flight and the opening hours of city attractions. Day five finishes after Assy, the trout farm and Issyk Lake. If an earlier airport transfer is needed, part of the sightseeing can be shortened by agreement. Share your departure time before the programme is confirmed.

Do we visit Big Almaty Lake before Shymbulak?

Yes. Your guide first takes you to the transfer point near the Ayusay Visitor Centre. The included local private taxi takes around 40 minutes each way, with 1.5–2 hours at Big Almaty Lake. Access and road conditions can affect timings. After a traditional lunch, continue to Medeu and Shymbulak, where the ascent depends on weather and cable-car operation.

Is a city tour possible on the arrival day?

The programme includes Panfilov Park, Zenkov Cathedral and the Green Bazaar. The order and length of visits are arranged around your flight, traffic and opening hours. Share your arrival time before booking.

How much walking is needed at Charyn and Kaindy?

At Charyn, choose upper viewpoints or a walk inside the canyon. At Kaindy, a local UAZ can shorten the approach, but a walking section remains. Your guide adapts the pace and distance to the group.

Can weather affect the Assy Plateau visit?

Assy is usually accessible from May to October. Even during this period, access depends on weather and the mountain road. In other months or when the plateau is inaccessible, changes to the programme are agreed separately.

Where does the tour end, and when should I book my departure?

On day five, return to Almaty for an airport or hotel transfer. Agree your flight time in advance: sightseeing can be shortened if an earlier airport arrival is needed. The standard day includes Assy, lunch in Turgen and Issyk Lake.

How do I book?

Send your dates and group size. A manager agrees the route, preferred stops, accommodation and dietary needs with you. The remaining 80% is due on day one; payment in US dollars is available. For direct Silk Travel bookings, cancellation 14 calendar days or more before the start receives a refund of 100% of the amount paid; with less notice, the 20% deposit is non-refundable. Third-party bookings follow their platform terms.

Are the tours private?

Yes. Every tour is for your own party, including solo travellers. We do not run join-in groups or add you to another booking. Your English-speaking guide adapts walks, stops and time at locations to your interests and ability within the agreed itinerary. Extra days, accommodation upgrades and optional paid activities are quoted separately.

How can I stay connected during the trip?

On routes through Almaty, Bishkek or Karakol, you can buy a local SIM card along the way; tell us if you would like help. Mobile coverage depends on the operator and may be unavailable in remote mountain areas.
