About this tour

This private tour costs US$840 per person for four guests sharing twin or double rooms (US$3,360 for the group): US$1,050 for three, US$1,350 for two or US$2,530 for a solo traveller. Four nights, meals, drinking water and snacks, an English-speaking guide-driver, private transport, fuel, entrance tickets and the local UAZ transfer at Kaindy are included. Flights, insurance, horse riding, boat hire, extra days and accommodation upgrades cost extra. Airport pickup on the tour start date is included; transfers before that date and Almaty hotel nights outside the itinerary are extra. Agree flight times before booking.

Five days out of Almaty bring together the dry landscapes of Altyn-Emel and the greener foothills of the Tian Shan. Walk among the Aktau Mountains, climb the Singing Dune, see the submerged spruce trees of Kaindy and spend an afternoon beside Lower Kolsai Lake. The route finishes with Charyn Canyon, Turgen Gorge, Assy Plateau and Issyk Lake.

The journey between Basshi and Saty is part of the experience: Tiger Mountains, Zharkent Mosque, a coffee stop in Chundzha, Temirlik Canyon and Lunar Canyon break up the drive. Allow around six hours after lunch for this section, including the planned stops; actual timing depends on road conditions and the group’s pace.

This tour runs year-round, usually at the same published prices in winter. Stay one night in Basshi, two in Saty and one in Turgen in checked guesthouses or hotels with private in-room showers and toilets; we usually use the same properties in winter. Assy Plateau is normally visited May–October, depending on weather and roads, and is always replaced in winter with a stop agreed individually before booking. We refine the plan for the weather. Walks can be shortened or skipped to suit your party.

Detailed tour program

  1. Day 1Altyn-Emel · guesthouse overnight

Almaty — Basshi — Aktau Mountains — Basshi

A first day among coloured mountain slopes

Leave Almaty in the morning for Basshi, the village used as a base for Altyn-Emel National Park. Have lunch on arrival, then continue towards the Aktau Mountains. The approach follows park tracks, making the drive part of the experience of this open landscape.

Allow time for walking and photographs among Aktau’s layered slopes. Your guide chooses accessible sections and a comfortable pace. Return to Basshi towards evening for dinner and a guesthouse stay.

  2. Day 2Dune, architecture and canyons · Saty overnight

Singing Dune — Zharkent — canyons — Saty

Via the Tiger Mountains, Chundzha, Temirlik and Lunar Canyon

After breakfast, visit the Singing Dune. Climb as far along its sandy ridge as feels comfortable or explore the base. Return to Basshi for lunch before setting off towards Saty.

Stop at the Tiger Mountains and visit Zharkent Mosque, then take a coffee break in Chundzha. Continue to Temirlik and Lunar Canyon for short walks and photo stops before arriving in Saty. Allow around six hours for the afternoon section including stops; weather, road conditions and the pace of visits affect arrival time. Dinner and a guesthouse stay follow in Saty.

  3. Day 3Two lakes · a second night in Saty

Saty — Kaindy Lake — Kolsai Lake — Saty

    Explore without changing accommodation

After breakfast, head to Kaindy Lake. The included local UAZ reduces the walking approach from the parking area. Explore accessible viewpoints and see spruce trunks rising from the water, then return to Saty for lunch.

Spend the afternoon at Lower Kolsai Lake, with time to walk beside the water and relax beneath wooded slopes. Boat hire and horse riding are optional extras. Return to the same Saty guesthouse for dinner and another overnight stay.

  4. Day 4Walks and a transfer · Turgen overnight

Charyn — Baiseit — Bear Waterfall — Turgen

The Valley of Castles and a trail in Turgen Gorge

After breakfast, drive to Charyn Canyon. Those keen to walk further can follow the roughly 7 km route to the river and back, while upper viewpoints offer a shorter option. Your guide plans the walk around the group’s ability and the rest of the day.

Have lunch in Baiseit, then drive to Turgen Gorge. Once in the gorge, visit Bear Waterfall and the visitor centre and take a walk in the surroundings. Afterwards, stay overnight in a Turgen guesthouse or hotel.

  5. Day 5Finish at Almaty airport or a city hotel

Assy Plateau — trout farm — Issyk Lake — Almaty

A mountain plateau, local lunch and a final lake

Set off from Turgen towards Assy Plateau in the morning. It is usually accessible from May to October, with approaches and stops depending on weather and road conditions. After walks and photographs, return for lunch at a trout farm.

Visit Issyk Lake after lunch and continue to Almaty for your airport or hotel transfer. Agree flight times in advance: part of the final day’s sightseeing can be shortened for an earlier airport arrival. Outside the Assy access season, this day’s programme is discussed separately.

The second afternoon takes around six hours from Basshi to Saty, including the Tiger Mountains, Zharkent Mosque, coffee in Chundzha, Temirlik and Lunar Canyon. Timing is approximate and depends on roads and the group’s pace. Assy is usually accessible May–October; outside this period, day five is agreed separately. Discuss your departure flight in advance.

Great Guide, Great Tour

Had an excellent three day small group tour to Altyn Emel, Kaindy/Kolsai and Charyn Canyon with Tau. Tau was a terrific guide and I highly recommend him. He was friendly and a lot of fun. He has lots of knowledge of the area and was very generous with his time to allow us all the opportunity to enjoy the area. Also takes great photos!

The places we visited on the tour are beautiful and very worth the effort to travel there. Kazakhstan surpassed all expectations and loved my time there.

Fantastic guide, amazing trip!

Travelled with my mom in a group tour last June. We had Tau as our guide and it was a magical trip! Great driver and conversationalist, and he took us to some beautiful landscapes and also on some unreal hikes and climbs. Also very well prepared - borrowed many blankets when the temperatures got a little chilly, and had rain ponchos on hand when the weather turned rainy.

After we returned to Almaty, Tau provided great recommendations and showed some pretty neat bars / spots around town.

Hands-down, one of the highlights for summer 2019. Highly recommended. Tau will ensure that you have a great time in Kazakhstan!

A thrilling 6 day tour

“He tailored and adjusted the tour schedule according to our preference.”

A five-day route from Almaty through Altyn-Emel and the lake country

The tour starts with an overnight base in Basshi for the Aktau Mountains and Singing Dune in Altyn-Emel National Park. On day two, the journey east takes in Tiger Mountains and the distinctive architecture of Zharkent Mosque before continuing through Chundzha to Temirlik Canyon, Lunar Canyon and Saty.

Two nights in Saty give Kaindy and Lower Kolsai their own full day without moving accommodation. Charyn Canyon follows on day four, while Turgen Gorge, Assy Plateau and Issyk Lake bring a different mountain landscape to the final part of the route.

What the private Almaty region tour includes

Your guide-driver, vehicle, fuel, drinking water, meals, park and attraction entry tickets, local UAZ transfer at Kaindy and all four nights are included. Accommodation is in guesthouses, with a guesthouse or hotel in Turgen. Group rates use twin or double rooms.

The price per person is $840 for four guests, $1,050 for three, $1,350 for two and $2,530 for one. Horse riding and boat hire are optional extras. The guide adjusts walking distances and time at stops to the group, subject to access, weather and the day’s travel.

Charyn Canyon to Bear Waterfall in Turgen Gorge

After the Charyn walk, lunch is in Baiseit. The onward drive leads to Turgen Gorge, where the programme includes Bear Waterfall, the visitor centre and a walk in the surroundings. The overnight stay is in Turgen, ready for the next morning’s journey to Assy Plateau.

When to travel and how demanding is the route?

This tour runs year-round, usually at the same prices in winter. Assy is normally visited May–October, depending on weather and roads; in winter we always replace it with a stop agreed with you before booking. The standard route uses easy walks without technical climbing or special training. Your guide can shorten or skip walks and use viewpoints reached by vehicle. Rough roads, especially in Altyn-Emel, remain part of the journey. In summer we visit hot locations in the morning or towards evening and shorten walks in strong heat. Bring grippy footwear, a warm layer and sun protection.

Returning to Almaty after Assy Plateau and Issyk Lake

In season, the final day combines Assy, a trout-farm lunch and Issyk Lake; in winter we replace Assy by prior agreement. Finish at an Almaty hotel or the airport. Send your flight time before booking: we adapt the last day to plan airport arrival at least three hours before departure.

After Charyn Canyon, lunch is in Baiseit. You then drive to Turgen Gorge to visit Bear Waterfall and the visitor centre and walk in the gorge. The overnight stay is in Turgen.

When is Assy Plateau accessible?

The full Charyn river walk is about 7 km return, but you can shorten or skip it and choose a viewpoint reached by vehicle. Your guide adapts the pace and stops to your party. Uneven ground and rough roads remain; tell us about injuries or mobility needs before booking.

Can the tour finish at Almaty airport?

Yes. Agree your flight before booking so we can adapt the final day and plan airport arrival at least three hours before departure. Airport pickup on the tour start date is also included. If arriving before that date, a separate one-way transfer costs around US$70 per vehicle for up to five guests or around US$100 for a larger party; Almaty hotel stays outside the itinerary are extra.

How do I book?

Send your dates and group size. A manager agrees the route, preferred stops, accommodation and dietary needs with you. After you confirm the itinerary and total price, pay a 20% deposit: we secure your guide and then reserve the agreed accommodation. The remaining 80% is due on day one; payment in US dollars is available. Third-party bookings follow their platform terms.

Are the tours private?

Yes. Every tour is for your own party, including solo travellers. We do not run join-in groups or add you to another booking. Your English-speaking guide adapts walks, stops and time at locations to your interests and ability within the agreed itinerary. Extra days, accommodation upgrades and optional paid activities are quoted separately.

What vehicles do you use?

All our vehicles are comfortable, air-conditioned and undergo technical inspections. For groups of up to 4 guests, we use off-road-capable Toyota Land Cruiser or Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs. For 5 guests, we use a Toyota Sequoia SUV. For groups of more than 5 guests, we use a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

What if prices differ by group size?

The price depends on group size. Send your dates and the number of people and a manager will confirm the exact offer.

Can you arrange halal meals, vegetarian food and food allergies?

Yes. Vegetarian and halal meals can be arranged in advance, with food adapted to guests’ preferences. Tell us about allergies before booking. A severe allergy requires individual discussion and confirmation of arrangements, including any needed controls against contact with the allergen. Check the chosen tour’s meal inclusions: meals are paid separately on some itineraries.

Do you provide child car seats?

Yes. We provide a child car seat on advance request. Tell us the child’s age and height when booking so we can prepare a suitable seat before the tour starts.

How can I stay connected during the trip?

On routes through Almaty, Bishkek or Karakol, you can buy a local SIM card along the way; tell us if you would like help. Mobile coverage depends on the operator and may be unavailable in remote mountain areas.
