Detailed tour program

  1. Day 1Charyn and Lower Kolsai · yurt or guesthouse overnight

Almaty — Charyn Canyon — Saty — Kolsai Lake — Saty

From the Valley of Castles to a lake framed by spruce forest

Leave Almaty for Charyn Canyon in the morning, with an optional fuel-station stop for coffee and a break along the way. In the Valley of Castles, your guide adapts the walk to the group: the full route to the river and back is around 7 km, while an upper-viewpoint route is about 3–4 km. There is also an opportunity to pause for tea or coffee at Tary restaurant overlooking the canyon.

Continue to Saty village for lunch, then visit Lower Kolsai Lake. It is about 15 km from Saty, usually a 15–20 minute drive, followed by roughly 200 m on foot from the parking area. Walk beside the water and wooded slopes, or take a break at a restaurant with lake views. Boat hire and horse riding are optional extras.

Return to Saty for dinner and an overnight stay in a guesthouse or yurt. The accommodation choice is confirmed when booking and depends on the season. Guesthouse rooms have private showers and toilets; facilities at the yurt camp may be shared.

  2. Day 2Kaindy in the morning · lunch in Saty · canyon viewpoints

Saty — Kaindy Lake — Saty — Black and Lunar canyons — Almaty

Submerged spruce trees and a scenic journey back

After breakfast, head to Kaindy Lake. The local UAZ transfer, included in the tour price, takes you closer to the lake, leaving approximately 300 m to walk from the upper parking area. Explore the submerged spruce trees and accessible photo viewpoints. An upper viewpoint can be added according to your interests and ability; horse riding is a separate paid option.

Return to Saty for lunch before setting off for Almaty. Stop at Black Canyon and Lunar Canyon to see their contrasting rock shapes and colours, walk around accessible viewpoints and take photographs. Your guide plans the order and length of these stops around roads, weather and daylight.

Finish at your hotel or another pre-arranged location in Almaty. Arrival time depends on traffic, road conditions and the pace of the visits. Discuss any onward flight before booking.

The tour operates year-round. Weather, roads and daylight can affect the length of walks and the order of stops. Confirm your yurt or guesthouse stay in advance; yurt facilities may be shared. Meals, one overnight stay, entrance tickets and the local UAZ transfer at Kaindy are included; boats and horse riding cost extra.

Great Guide, Great Tour

Had an excellent three day small group tour to Altyn Emel, Kaindy/Kolsai and Charyn Canyon with Tau. Tau was a terrific guide and I highly recommend him. He was friendly and a lot of fun. He has lots of knowledge of the area and was very generous with his time to allow us all the opportunity to enjoy the area. Also takes great photos!

The places we visited on the tour are beautiful and very worth the effort to travel there. Kazakhstan surpassed all expectations and loved my time there.

Fantastic guide, amazing trip!

Travelled with my mom in a group tour last June. We had Tau as our guide and it was a magical trip! Great driver and conversationalist, and he took us to some beautiful landscapes and also on some unreal hikes and climbs. Also very well prepared - borrowed many blankets when the temperatures got a little chilly, and had rain ponchos on hand when the weather turned rainy.

After we returned to Almaty, Tau provided great recommendations and showed some pretty neat bars / spots around town.

Hands-down, one of the highlights for summer 2019. Highly recommended. Tau will ensure that you have a great time in Kazakhstan!

A thrilling 6 day tour

“He tailored and adjusted the tour schedule according to our preference.”

Two days at Kolsai and Kaindy, starting from Almaty

Saty provides a base between the two lakes, with meals and an overnight stay in the village. Visit Lower Kolsai on the first afternoon after Charyn. Kaindy comes the next morning, starting after breakfast in Saty rather than after a long drive from Almaty.

The journey home also includes sightseeing. After lunch on day two, stop at Black Canyon and Lunar Canyon for views and short walks. Their duration depends on weather, access roads and the time needed for the return to Almaty.

Staying in Saty: a guesthouse or a yurt

Choose a guesthouse if a private shower and toilet in your room are priorities. A yurt offers a different overnight experience, with facilities that may be shared around the camp. We discuss your preference when booking and confirm the option according to season and availability.

The evening in Saty includes dinner and rest before Kaindy. There is one overnight stay in the itinerary; after the second day’s lunch in the village, begin the return journey via the canyon viewpoints. Programme meals and accommodation are included.

Choose a Charyn Canyon walk that suits you

In the Valley of Castles, the full walk to the river and back is around 7 km, while an upper-viewpoint route is approximately 3–4 km. Your guide considers children, older guests and individual activity preferences. You may also stop for tea or coffee at Tary restaurant with views over the canyon.

The Kaindy approach and optional activities

At Kaindy, the included local UAZ transfer takes you to the nearer parking area, leaving around 300 m on foot to the lake. Additional viewpoints are selected to suit the group. Horse riding is a paid alternative, and boat hire at Kolsai is also extra. Entrance tickets to the main sights are included.

Year-round departures, pricing and the return to Almaty

The tour runs year-round, though weather and roads can change the sequence and duration of stops. Per-person prices are $290 with four guests, $370 with three, $480 with two and $890 for one traveller. Before booking, share your dates, accommodation preference and any onward flight time.
